Many times, a root canal can be sufficient
to treat to tooth infection. However, in some situations,
the infection site at the end of the root fails to heal after
a root canal done,
causing further infection and painful inflammation. An apicoectomy
may save the tooth by removal of the infected tissue. This
surgery involves a small incision made over the site and removal
of the infection. The area is then cleaned and the wound is
closed. With the infection absent, new bone can fill in the
region.
